Custer State Park
This morning we headed to Custer State Park. It was the first time Charlie had witnessed a bison herd on the open grassland, and she was awed by it. We learned that the buffalo herd in Tennessee (as well as many others) was started with animals from Custer. We also enjoyed seeing the wild burro herds, pronghorns and prairie dogs, etc. The park was a great place to experience a variety of wildlife. We left Custer and headed to Wind Cave National Park via Iron Mountain Road which runs thru the Black Hills. Along the highway there were several tunnels which were constructed by the CCC in the 30's. As you exited these tunnels you were met with wonderful views of Mt. Rushmore.
